DPS inquiry deadlines announced

A privileges committee inquiry process has been kicked off with a submission date announced today - the same day it issued a report into another request from an aggrieved individual.

One of two attempts by Senator Jane Hume to get an inquiry happening into the Department of Parliamentary Services has now formally kicked off with the announcement of a submission deadline.

The Senate’s privileges committee is chaired by Hume and that committee’s web page has published the terms of reference as well as the submission deadline.

Submissions to the inquiry are due on January 23, 2026, and it will be interesting to see how many people send submissions in to the committee over the holiday break.

A reporting day to the Senate of March 10, 2026, has been announced. The terms of reference is as follows:

The following matters be referred to the Privileges Committee for inquiry and report by 10 March 2026:

  1. the current processes and policies for handling and maintaining documents, communications and technology that may be subject to a claim or parliamentary privilege, with particular reference to:

    1. the Department of Parliamentary Services’ policies and procedures relating to parliamen…
